- 1 pound extra firm tofu (cut into 1-inch cubes)
- 3 tablespoons grapeseed oil (Divided or canola, or other high heat neutral oil)
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch (divided)
- The Sauce and Vegetables
- ½ cup orange juice (if using fresh juice, from 2-3 oranges)
- 1 orange (zest only)
- ¼ cup tamari (or soy sauce)
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon agave (or honey)
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger (peeled and grated)
- ¼ teaspooon Tabasco (or Sriracha or other hot sauce)
- 1 onion (peeled and slice)
- 1 red pepper (seeds and sliced)
- 4 cups broccoli florets (cut into small pieces)
- 2 garlic cloves (peeled nd minced)
- salt
- pepper
- 2 teaspoons sesame seeds (or ¼ cup roasted and unsalted peanuts. Optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Heat the oven to 425°, and line a sheet pan with parchment paper
- In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together 1 tablespoon of oil, 1 tablespoon of cornstarch, and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Add the tofu cubes into the cornstarch mixture, and gently toss until tofu is evenly coated. Place the tofu onto the sheet pan, and bake until it’s browned on multiple sides, approximately 25-30 minutes. Turn the tofu over every 10 minutes while it’s baking
- For the sauce, in a medium-sized bowl, combine the orange juice and zest, tamari, sesame oil, agave, ginger, Tabasco, and remaining 1 tablespoon cornstarch in a large glass measuring cup or bowl. Stir with a whisk until smooth; set aside
- Place a large skillet or wok over a medium-high heat. When it’s heated, add 2 tablespoons of oil, then the onion, red pepper, and broccoli, and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cook for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring often, or until tender. Add the garlic, and cook for 30 seconds more, until fragrant. If the vegetables start to stick in the pan, sprinkle in a tablespoon or two of water. After cooking, transfer the vegetables to a bowl
- Whisk the sauce again, to make sure no lumps have formed from the resting corn starch. In the same hot skillet, pour in the orange sauce, and bring it to a simmer. The sauce will thicken quickly. Add in the browned tofu and gently mix it in with the sauce. Adjust the flavor with tamari, Tabasco, or sesame oil, if needed. Remove the skillet from the heat
- To serve, divide the vegetables onto plates, and spoon the tofu and sauce over the vegetables
- Serve with rice
